On an entirely different day in 1902, November 15th to be exact, Mark Twain wrote the following, requesting editing rights to any and all of his upcoming obituaries:
“Of necessity, an Obituary is a thing which cannot be so judiciously edited by any hand as by that of the subject of it. In such a work it is not the Facts that are of chief importance, but the light which the obituarist shall throw upon them, the meanings which he shall dress them in, the conclusions which he shall draw from them, and the judgments which he shall deliver upon them. The Verdicts, you understand: that is the danger-line.”
Oh to have been so prescient. Don’t believe everything they say about me. Just remember that I never flagged in sleeping, or drinking, or scaring neighborhood children, right to the bitter end.
Editor’s note:
Wretched Richard will be sorely missed. Or sorely be missed. Knowing the difference is one of many reasons we needed him. And indeed the Almanac will remain here until WordPress learns that the card on file is no longer valid.
And with that, to quote a certain twentieth century American pig of letters:
“That’s all Folks!”
